Switch-Interlocked Assemblies How They Work
A switch-interlocked plug and socket assembly incorporates a mechanical interlock between the integral isolating switch and the plug connector. The interlock prevents the plug from being inserted or withdrawn while the switch is in the ON (energised) position and prevents the switch from being turned ON until the plug is fully engaged. This eliminates the possibility of live connection or disconnection, making the assembly safe for use in Zone 1 classified areas.
This design is the mandatory choice for portable equipment connections in Zone 1 including temporary generator feeds, portable test equipment, maintenance power outlets, and skid-mounted temporary loads.
Non-Interlocked Assemblies
Non-interlocked Ex e or Ex d plug and socket assemblies are used for circuits that are inherently de-energised at the time of connection and disconnection for example, control circuits, instrumentation loops, and lighting circuits on isolatable systems. They are commonly used in Zone 2 areas where the risk of a live arc is acceptably low under the specific operating procedures.

Our Ex d and Ex e socket housings are designed to accept IEC 60309-compliant plug inserts meaning the pin and socket geometry is fully compatible with standard industrial CEE-form plugs. The Ex rating is on the housing and interlock mechanism; the insert itself follows the standard IEC 60309 configuration. This ensures that portable equipment with standard IEC 60309 plugs can be connected to the Ex-rated socket assembly without modification.
