The term ‘explosion proof’ has a precise technical and regulatory meaning. It refers to electrical equipment designed, tested, and certified to prevent the ignition of flammable gases, vapours, or dusts that may be present in classified hazardous areas. In the UAE, all electrical equipment installed in classified locations must comply with the IEC 60079 series of standards and carry valid ATEX or IECEx certification as required.

What Does Explosion Proof Mean in UAE Industrial Contexts?

The term ‘explosion proof’ has a precise technical and regulatory meaning. It refers to electrical equipment designed, tested, and certified to prevent the ignition of flammable gases, vapours, or dusts that may be present in classified hazardous areas. In the UAE, all electrical equipment installed in classified locations must comply with the IEC 60079 series of standards and carry valid ATEX or IECEx certification  as required by ADNOC specifications, UAE Fire and Life Safety Code, and free zone authority regulations.

True explosion proof equipment must be independently certified by an accredited certification body, carry the correct Ex marking, and be installed in strict accordance with IEC 60079-14. Equipment simply labelled ‘suitable for hazardous areas’ without valid certification is not compliant and presents an unacceptable safety and legal risk.

Explosion Protection Concepts  What We Design and Build

Our engineering team designs and assembles panels to the following certified protection concepts, selected and combined based on your area classification, gas group, and temperature class:

Concept Marking How It Works Typical Application
Flameproof enclosure Ex d Contains internal explosion, prevents flame transmission to surrounding atmosphere MCCs, PLC panels, starters, distribution boards in Zone 1/2
Increased safety Ex e Eliminates ignition sources through enhanced construction  no arcs or sparks under normal or fault conditions Terminal boxes, JBs, motors, lighting in Zone 1/2
Pressurisation / purging Ex p Maintains positive internal pressure with clean air or inert gas to exclude hazardous atmosphere Large control panels, analyser houses, PLC cabinets Zone 1/2
Intrinsic safety Ex i Limits electrical energy to levels incapable of causing ignition Field instruments, sensors, transmitters Zone 0/1/2
Non-sparking Ex nA Prevents arc and spark formation under normal operation Equipment in Zone 2, lower-risk classified areas

What certifications are required for explosion proof equipment in UAE?

In the UAE, electrical equipment installed in classified hazardous areas must comply with the IEC 60079 series of standards. ADNOC-governed projects require IECEx certification as a minimum, with the supporting Certificate of Conformity (CoC), test report, and installation instructions to be supplied with the equipment. ATEX-certified equipment is also widely accepted, particularly on projects involving European EPC contractors or international clients. Equipment must be marked with the appropriate Ex marking, zone, gas group, and temperature class.

What is the difference between ATEX and IECEx certification?

ATEX is a European Union directive governing equipment for use in explosive atmospheres and is widely specified on European and GCC projects. IECEx is an internationally recognised certification scheme administered by the IEC and accepted in over 80 countries including the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Australia, and South Africa. Both reference the same IEC 60079 technical standards. For UAE Oil & Gas projects, IECEx is the preferred certification. Our team can advise which certification is appropriate for your specific project and client specification.

Can Team Switchgear supply explosion proof panels for Zone 1 and Zone 2 areas?

Yes. We design, manufacture, and test explosion proof panels for Zone 1, Zone 2, Zone 21, and Zone 22 classified areas. Our panels are built using certified BARTEC enclosures and populated with Siemens, Schneider, and ABB components, assembled to IEC 60079 standards in our Dubai facility. Each panel is supplied with full ATEX/IECEx certification documentation, a complete Ex dossier, and FAT test records.

What gas groups and temperature classes do your panels cover?

Our explosion proof panels are designed to cover gas groups IIA, IIB, and IIB+H2 (Hydrogen applications) as required with IIC available on request for the most demanding applications. Temperature classes T1 through T6 are covered depending on the selected enclosure and internal component heat dissipation analysis. Gas group and temperature class are confirmed at the design stage based on the client’s area classification and hazardous area dossier.

Do you perform Factory Acceptance Testing on explosion proof panels?

Yes  100% FAT is performed at our Dubai manufacturing facility on every panel we produce. FAT testing includes insulation resistance testing, high-voltage testing, functional testing of control logic and interlocks, Ex enclosure integrity checks, and review of all documentation. Witnessed FAT by the client’s representative or an approved third-party inspection body (TUV, Intertek, Bureau Veritas) is accommodated as standard.

What is the lead time for explosion proof panels from UAE?

Lead times depend on the complexity and scope of the panel. Standard Ex d junction boxes and local control stations can typically be delivered within 4–8 weeks from order confirmation and approved drawings. Full explosion proof MCCs, PLC panels, or complex Ex switchgear projects typically require 10–16 weeks from approved design. Because we manufacture locally in Dubai, we can often deliver faster than import-based suppliers. Contact our team for a project-specific schedule.
