What ATEX certifications are required for electrical panels in UAE Oil & Gas projects?
UAE Oil & Gas projects – particularly those involving ADNOC, GASCO, and TAKREER – require IECEx certification as the primary explosion protection standard under IEC 60079. IECEx (International Electrotechnical Commission System for Certification to Standards Relating to Equipment for Use in Explosive Atmospheres) is globally recognised and accepted by all GCC national oil companies including ADNOC, ARAMCO, PDO, and KNPC. ATEX (EU Directive 2014/34/EU) is additionally required for European-origin projects or when EPC specifications mandate dual ATEX/IECEx compliance. For North American-specification projects involving US oil majors, the BARTEC EJB-UL enclosures we supply additionally carry UL/cUL Class I Division 1 NEC 505 listing. All certification documentation – IECEx certificates, ATEX declarations, test reports – is supplied for ADNOC vendor qualification packages.
What is the difference between ESD, SIS, FGS, and ICSS systems?
These are all safety-related control systems but at different levels of the safety architecture. An Emergency Shutdown System (ESD) performs the primary safety function of shutting down plant equipment in a safe state upon detection of a hazardous condition – it is typically the highest priority safety layer. A Safety Instrumented System (SIS) is the broader term encompassing all safety instrumented functions (SIFs), including ESD, and is defined by IEC 61511. A Fire and Gas System (FGS) detects flame, gas, or smoke and initiates fire and gas responses – sounding alarms, activating suppression, and triggering ESD actions. An Integrated Control and Safety System (ICSS) combines the Basic Process Control System (BPCS) and the Safety System (SIS/ESD/FGS) into a single integrated platform – typically using Siemens S7-1500F failsafe PLCs with PROFIsafe over PROFINET.
