Industrial Automation & Process Control Systems – UAE, GCC

The UAE’s residential tower and community market is one of the most active construction sectors in the Middle East – with DEWA, FEWA, SEWA, and ADDC electrical utility approvals, Estidama Pearl Rating compliance, and Green Building regulation adherence all mandatory for new residential developments. Team Switchgear and Control LLC manufactures the complete range of LV electrical distribution panels for residential towers, villa communities, and mixed-use developments – from final distribution boards (FDB) inside individual apartments through to main distribution boards (MDB) at substation level, feeder pillars for community street and amenity supply, and building management systems for common area HVAC and energy management.

Regulatory Compliance for UAE Residential Projects

DEWA (Dubai Electricity and Water Authority): Panel designs submitted and approved to DEWA standards. DEWA approved metering, SPD, and ELCB requirements built into every panel design at the specification stage.
FEWA and SEWA: Panels designed and approved to FEWA (Northern Emirates) and SEWA (Sharjah) utility authority standards.
ADDC (Abu Dhabi Distribution Company): Abu Dhabi residential panels designed to ADDC regulations and Abu Dhabi Municipality requirements.
Estidama Pearl Rating: Sub-metering and energy monitoring requirements addressed in panel design. Energy data from SMDB and MDB levels for Pearl Rating documentation.
IEC 61439: All LV assemblies manufactured to IEC 61439-1 (general requirements) and IEC 61439-2 (power switchgear and controlgear assemblies).

What is the difference between an MDB, SMDB, and FDB in a residential?

These are the three levels of LV electrical distribution in a typical UAE residential tower. The Main Distribution Board (MDB) is the primary LV panel fed directly from the substation transformer secondary – it contains the main incomer circuit breaker, bus bars, and outgoing feeders to the floors or zones of the building. The Sub-Main Distribution Board (SMDB) is installed on each floor or zone, fed from the MDB via a riser cable, and distributes power to the individual apartments or units on that floor. The Final Distribution Board (FDB), also called a consumer unit, is inside each apartment – it contains the MCBs and ELCBs that protect the circuits within the unit (lighting, sockets, air conditioning, water heater). Team Switchgear manufactures all three levels – MDB, SMDB, and FDB – to IEC 61439, with metering at each level for DEWA sub-metering compliance and energy monitoring.

Do residential panels in UAE need to have surge protection (SPD)?

Yes – DEWA’s installation requirements and the UAE National Electrical Code reference IEC 61643 (surge protection) and mandate SPD installation at the point of supply (Type 1 or Type 2 at the MDB) and at distribution board level (Type 2/3 at SMDB) for new residential buildings in Dubai. This is to protect building electrical systems and sensitive electronics from transient overvoltages caused by lightning strikes and switching events on the DEWA supply network. Team Switchgear installs Phoenix Contact VAL series Type 1 and Type 2 SPDs as standard in all MDB and SMDB assemblies for UAE residential projects. For Abu Dhabi ADDC projects, SPD requirements are similarly mandated in ADDC distribution standards.
