An explosion proof power distribution panel is a certified electrical switchboard or distribution board housed within a flameproof (Ex d) or increased safety (Ex e) enclosure, designed to prevent any internal arc, spark, or fault from igniting an explosive atmosphere in the surrounding classified area. These panels distribute electrical power safely from a main source to multiple sub-circuits motors, lighting, instrumentation, and process equipment within Zone 1, Zone 2, or Division 1/2 hazardous locations.
Unlike standard distribution boards, every component within an Ex d panel must be rated for the specific gas group (IIA, IIB, IIB+H2, or IIC) and temperature class (T1–T6) applicable to the installation area. All cable entries are certified Ex d gland-sealed, and the enclosure is precision-machined to maintain flameproof integrity even under internal fault conditions.

Can explosion proof distribution panels be used for both Zone 1 and Zone 2?
Yes. Equipment certified for Zone 1 (Category 2G) is also approved for use in Zone 2 areas. We typically design to Zone 1 requirements (Ex d, Category 2G) as a minimum, which covers both zones. For purely Zone 2 installations, Ex e (increased safety) enclosures may be used, providing a more cost-effective solution where permitted by the area classification study.
What documentation is supplied with your Ex distribution panels?
Every panel is supplied with a complete Ex documentation package: IECEx Certificate of Conformity or ATEX Declaration of Conformity, Ex enclosure manufacturer datasheets, component Ex certificates, FAT test records, interconnection and wiring diagrams, GA drawings, bill of materials, and cable gland schedule. All documentation is reviewed and signed off by our Ex Quality Representative prior to shipment.
