How Rotary Phase Converters Work

A rotary phase converter is an electro-mechanical device essentially a specially wound electric motor that generates a third phase from a single-phase input. The output is a synthesised three-phase supply suitable for driving three-phase induction motors, HVAC compressors, and industrial equipment. Unlike electronic (static) phase converters, rotary converters produce a genuine rotating magnetic field and are suitable for high-torque motor starting applications.

Is a rotary phase converter suitable for all three-phase equipment?

Rotary phase converters are suitable for most standard three-phase induction motors and resistive loads. They are not recommended for highly sensitive electronic loads, variable frequency drives, or equipment with strict phase-balance requirements. For VFD-driven motors, an electronic (digital) phase converter is preferable as it delivers a more closely balanced three-phase output. Our team can advise the most appropriate conversion solution based on your specific load characteristics.

What size rotary phase converter do I need?

The converter rating is determined by the starting kVA of the largest motor in the connected load plus the continuous kVA of all other loads running simultaneously. As a general guide, the converter rating should be 1.5 to 2 times the kW rating of the largest motor to accommodate the starting current surge. We size and select the converter for each application based on the client’s load schedule.
